National Lottery funding for Stubbylee Hall

Valley Heritage has been awarded a £48,700 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help secure a sustainable future for Stubbylee Hall in Bacup.

Made possible by the money raised by National Lottery players, the project will allow Valley Heritage, in partnership with the hall’s occupiers, the Stubbylee Park Masterplan Group, to discover more about the history of the hall, its context, and to develop a vision and strategic plan for the building’s long-term use.

Stubbylee Hall is a Grade II listed hall in Stubbylee Park. It was built in 1808 for the Holt Family who lived there until 1911. The house and its grounds were later bequeathed to Bacup and came into the ownership of the former Bacup Corporation. The hall housed Rossendale Council until it moved to nearby Futures Park. Today, although part of the building is used as offices, the majority of the hall is vacant.

In August 2018, Valley Heritage won the tender to work with owners, Rossendale Council, to help identify a future use for the hall.

Stephen Anderson, Chairman of Valley Heritage said: “Stubbylee Hall is a key heritage and community asset within Bacup, representing the amazing legacy of the Holt family. Thanks to National Lottery players, this funding will allow us to discover more about the hall’s fascinating past and create a plan that will see it brought back into full use, making it a hub of activity once again.”

“We look forward to working with the Stubbylee Park Masterplan Group and Rossendale Council to shape the plans. As the proposals develop, we will also be inviting members of the public to have their say through a series of consultation events.”

“Rossendale Borough Council is looking forward to working with Valley Heritage on this project. There is a lot of activity planned, with public consultation, walks around the hall and training for the groups involved with it. It’s an exciting opportunity to work with all of our partners on finding a long term use for the Stubbylee Hall” – Sam Plum, Director of Communities, Rossendale Borough Council.
